Freiburg im Breisgau is Germany’s southernmost major city and likes to call itself the capital of the Black Forest. At 1,284 metres, the Schauinsland is one of the Black Forest’s highest peaks and constitutes part of the city together with the Dreisam river.

Freiburg is crisscrossed by a unique network of “Bächle”(channels) several kilometres in length which are fed by the Dreisam.

The Albert Ludwig University was founded in 1457 by the Austrian Archduke Albrecht VI and is one of the oldest universities in the German-speaking countries.

The university faculties are spread over several sites in Freiburg. The Auditorium Maximum (Audimax) is located in the city centre.
